Khandi & Thokarwadi Dam – little known waterfalls near Pune
16:47:00
Khandi is located to the north of Pune, which is around 35 kms from Kanhe phata. This place is beautiful and greenery all around, the scenery of the mountains is so delightful with its dense forest.
It is a solo ride from Pune(Kondhwa) to Khandi which is around 78km, you have to take old Pune-Mumbai highway towards Mumbai and take a right turn from Kanhe Phata, then after crossing the railway gate you will reach the base village Khandi surrounded by Thokarwadi dam.
Thokarwadi dam was in my mind from past few years but finally the day has come and the entire journey was to see the Thokarwadi dam from all the direction by a round journey. It’s just like a circle to the dam and its backwater section.
In the many years of travelling around Pune, in monsoon season in exploration of waterfalls, this place and route was the best I have ever been on! Also it is so close to Pune and the roads are average to drive on!
The time when I left the highway was around 11am and with few snacks break I reached the first place of the ride which has a beautiful view of the waterfall on the rolling steps. There is one family which maintains this private place and charge 100rs per person to view this place with family waterfall pool.
It is totally worth visiting this place which has great waterfall and eternity pool, and then the water flows over the rolling steps which make this place photogenic.

Later moving on to the backwaters of the Thokarwadi dam there are numerous waterfalls to the side and road is such that we have mountain on the left side and the backwaters of the dam on the right. The road conditions are average with occasional potholes.
There are very few options for food so better make the arrangement before crossing the highway.
Second place was the small dam like structure where you can enjoy scenic beauty along with swimming in the dam. Don’t miss this place as this is one of the best spot on the backside of the dam.
As a rider I always desire for a long ride full of surprise with glimpse of natural sceneries and this ride was too astonishing and close to nature.
The whole journey was surrounded by the hills, trees, windmill on one side and the other side is the backwater. Not many villages, no pollution, no traffic!
If you are planning to visit Khandi and Thokarwadi Dam, let me tell you about the round trip of dam which takes around 4 hours from Kanhe-phata highway to highway. It should be visited either in monsoon or post monsoon to enjoy multiple scenic waterfalls. The entire road condition is average and not much crossing roads to get confused, a single road which will give you peace of mind. It will be peaceful 1 day ride around Pune and good options for trekker and bachelors and great place for campfire with a group of friends.
