The Great White Desert is one of the biggest salt deserts in the world and one of the best backpacking destinations in the state of Gujarat, which is endless miles of salty and marshy land in the Thar Desert. Rann of Kutch is located between Gujarat in India and the Sindh province in Pakistan and comprises around 30,000 sq. km of land which includes the Great Rann of Kutch, The Little Rann of Kutch and Banni grassland.
The White Desert is known not only for its natural splendor but for what its inhabitants have created – The Rann Utsav. Magnificent is the word that one could simply use and glorify the natural beauty of Kutch, Gujarat. It is one of the perfect winter holiday destinations in Gujarat and a one of a kind experience that you should explore at least one.
We visited this place on our road trip to Bhuj from Pune, which comprises Ekal Ka Rann, Dholavira, Mandvi Beach, The White desert and Thol Bird Sanctuary.

Rann of Kutch Festival is held in the Dhordo village situated in Kutch just 85 km (52.8 miles) from Bhuj.
The Rann Utsav usually starts in November and ends in February around Holi. The best time to visit the Rann of Kutch for the festival is on the full moon days that fall during this period. The festival begins in Bhuj but the entire region is set up for a carnival of arts, crafts, and culture of Gujarat.
How to Reach Kutch
Rann of Kutch is a place in Dhordo village which is 80km north of the Bhuj city. You can easily reach here either by train or by fight or by car/bike. Bhuj is the nearest city to Kutch in Gujarat approximately 75 km (1.5 hrs) to reach Kutch, so better plan to reach Bhuj first and then make your way to Kutch.
Where to Stay in Kutch
You can choose to stay in luxurious tents (authentic desert stay) which is only available during the Rann Utsav festival, the price of the tent is comparatively higher on full moon nights than the usual days. Also, if you plan to have a budget stay then Bhuj city is the correct option to stay around 400rs per person in the average hotel.

It is a simple and easy process to get the permit at Bhirandiyara check post while visiting the Great Rann of Kutch, it is located around 20 km before Dhordo. This checkpost is easy to spot as it lies on the intersection where you take a left turn to go to Dhordo and a straight path to reach Kalo Dungar. You will need identity proof like Voter ID, Aadhar Card, Passport, etc.Online permit is also available at Rann Permit website.
