Harmandir Sahib – Beautiful Golden Temple, Amritsar
17:19:00
The Golden Temple is the most famous of all the Sikh Gurdwaras (meaning “Gateway of the Guru”), it is also known as “Harmandir Sahib” or “Darbar Sahib”. The start of the temple as well as its design is credited to the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjun, in the 16th century while the foundation of the temple was laid down by a Muslim saint Hazrat Mian Mir Ji of Lahore.
The doors that are on each of the four sides symbolise the openness of Sikhs towards those of any faith, colour or walk of life.
We visited this temple on our trip to Chandigarh for a colleague wedding. This place seems to be beautifully design and constructed all around. The tank which holds the temple was constructed before the idea of the temple was even considered. The tank came to be known as Amritsar (Pool of nectar), which also gave the city its name.
Here are some pics of the amazing Golden Temple
While entering the temple complex, we had to take our shoes off and keep them in numerous counters (in exchange for a numbered token). We have to cover our head and wash feet in the shallow pool of water before entering. As you step into the archway, you have a beautiful glimpse of the golden roof of the temple.
Over 100,000 people visit the Golden Temple every day to worship and hear recites read from the Guru Granth Sahib –the holiest text of Sikhism which is always present inside the Gurdwaras.
It is a must visit place if you are visiting Punjab.
