The Harappan Site at Dholavira, Kutch, Gujarat

21:29:00

Dholavira Lake is one of the best Rann view and the most beautiful place while visiting The Great White Rann of Kutch. Dholavira in Gujarat is the last of the Indus Valley Sites to be excavated and discovered (Harappa, Mohenjodaro, Kalibangan, Lothal, Rupnagar, Ganeriwala, Rakhigarhi). This post is mostly about the beautiful drive on the Dholavira Lake flyover and The Harappan Site which is one of the famed for being one of the five largest Harappan sites which is located in the Khadir Beyt island in the district of Kutch.

Harappan site, reminds us of how amazingly intelligent our ancestors were to design a town at a location where a natural source of water is not available. The site of Dholavira showcases the bygone Sindhu or Indus Valley civilization which according to the excavations is believed to have been way ahead of its time and at par with present day America or European countries. The site was discovered in 1967-68 by J. P. Joshi, of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and is the fifth largest of eight major Harappan sites.

There is a museum and office of Archaeological Survey of India on to the right of the entrance. In the museum we saw an organized video show which gave all the information about the site, hence we didn’t avail the guide service from the office and went further to explore the excavated structures as per the signboards.

There is proof of water gathering frameworks, a system of tanks and lakes that supply water and even a sewage framework vastly improved than in a large portion of our present day urban communities. The remnants at Dholavira are isolated into three zones: the fortress (where the rulers or high authorities stayed), the center city and the lower city.

Dholavira is not a casual tourist place rather will only appeal to the senses of the historically inclined and a must visit place on the trip to Kutch.

How to Reach Dholavira
It was our second destination after Ekal Ka Rann and was much closer around 2 hr journey to visit as compared to Bhuj.
Dholavira can be reached from Bhuj as a day trip but it is nearly 5 hrs drive from each side. It is a well connected place by road and regular buses on the way to the city of Dholavira by Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation. Nearest airport is located in Bhuj which is 220 km away from Dholavira.

But as per my understanding the best decision would be to travel by personal vehicle and witteness the sunset or sunrise at Dholavira Lake flyover.
