Meriya Nature Resort - An Authentic Village Stay of Ekal Ka Rann at Chobbari
21:33:00
We woke up in the morning at Meriya Nature Resort in Kutch’s Chobari village when a flock of demoiselle cranes flew into the open space right in front of us. It was an amazing feeling like we have our own little bird sanctuary in this resort. These migratory cranes travel long distances from Eurasia and Mongolia to spend the winter in India. The birds make their temporary home in Khichan, a village in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, which is around 600 km from Chobari. For a few minutes every morning, right after sunrise, the birds spend a few minutes here at Meriya Nature Resort before flying away.
We stayed in this resort on our road trip to Gujarat, it is one of the best village homestay near “Ekal Ka Rann”.
It is an eco homestay run exclusively on solar Energy. So beware, there will be no wifi/internal and only basic amenities in the room. Plenty of trees and open space to enjoy birding and rural life experience of nature. We wake up to see a beautiful sunrise, sounds of migratory birds, peacocks wandering all over.
‘Meriya Nature Resort’ is run by Ramjibhai Meriya, a journalist, photographer, local Doordarshan correspondent, conservationist and a virtual encyclopedia of the Kutch region. He gave us all the details about the massive earthquake that rocked Bhuj in 2001 and how it converted this place into Rann of Kutch.
There are now 5-6 basic rooms, tent camping and a bhunga—a circular walled house with thatched roof in the traditional design of the Kutch region. We chose to stay in the tent camping with all the beds together.
At night we visited the less explored part of the area called ‘Ekal Ka Rann’ to experience the full moon on the white desert. In our stay, we enjoyed a meal of bajre ki roti, tamatar nu shaak (tomato curry), Gujarati kadhi and chhaas and next morning a breakfast of dal dhokli and chai.
