It was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur during the early 18th century in five cities, including Jaipur, Mathura, New Delhi, Ujjain and Varanasi. The biggest one of them is from Jaipur Jantar Mantar.

Samrat Yantra is one of the biggest of the four and it used to measure coordinates of astronomical objects. It was so accurate that it could tell time with a maximum error of only two seconds.

Jayaprakash Yantra was used to measure star positions relative to each other.

Ram Yantra was used as a place to make observations using the Jayaprakash Yantra.

Mishra Yantra was used to find out the time of the dat in different cities of the world.
